Prior to attempting a competitive examination or even deciding to appear one, it is necessary to examine if you - as a candidate - compliment it. You need to scrutinise each element and understand every nuance before committing yourself to the preparation.

The Graduate Management Admission Test, commonly known as GMAT, is a standardised global exam for admission into business management courses. It judges a candidate's ability on the basis of various tests and other credentials. The exam demands a thorough understanding of different concepts like reasoning, analysis, problem-solving etc. and it is important to recognise if you are all set to sit for the exam.

So, here is a guideline that you can put into practice before taking the GMAT exam or even preparing for it:-

  • UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

Research is the first step to gain a deep understanding of an examination. One needs to understand the meaning of GMAT, the eligibility criteria, the subjects and other credentials and scholarship opportunities. Along with these, one should prepare a list of colleges accepting GMAT scores, their acceptance rates and future prospects. Once through with the basic analysis, you can delve deeper.

  • BEING AWARE OF THE EXAM TYPE

Competitive examinations are conducted using different exam types and they vary according to the requirement. GMAT is a computer-based exam consisting of 80 questions to be solved in a stipulated time of 3 hours and 7 minutes. The level of difficulty in the exam increases if you answer questions correctly and is adjusted accordingly. Candidates are also given a choice among three combinations, and time and accuracy is super important as you cannot go back to the previous questions once answered. One is required to know the subjects, time allotment, breaks allowed etc. before deciding if they can equip themselves to give the test.

  • PREPARING PSYCHOLOGICALLY

Being psychologically prepared is more important than being physically prepared. Once you have understood the basic structure and exam type, it is high time to decide if you genuinely want to write the exam. Keep in mind your future aspirations and check if taking this step is aligning with your bigger goals. Consult with people who have been through the process and carry the experience of it. Do not indulge in making rash decisions that you might regret later, because it is important to build a career that you want to, absolutely and honestly.

  • CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT

If you are very sure of attempting the examination, Congratulations! You have just passed the first crucial step. Now, you need to create an environment to start your preparation. This is an underrated but important step because it builds a vibe where you want to study. You do not need to overindulge, rather put the available resources into use - set a table, focus on bright lighting, organise your study material, electronics and stationary, keep a water bottle handy, stash some snacks and you are good to go. The aim here is to set a mood which makes you comfortable and keeps you focused during the learning process.

  • MAKING A TIME OUTLINE

The very last step before attacking the prep material is drawing out an outline, keeping time as the basis. Consider the number of days you have at hand, put things into a pragmatic perspective and divide your hours judiciously. Allocate more time to your weaknesses and considerably lesser time to subjects that are your strengths. A time outline gives you a broad idea about the entire preparation process, which further helps in setting things into motion.
