What is TOEFL?

TOEFL, formally known as the “Test of English as a Foreign Language”, is an English proficiency test for those non-native English speakers who want to study overseas, in English-speaking countries.

The TOEFL test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities, and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K., and the United States. It also stands in need of other English-speaking countries.

It is administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) and is taken at various locations in India, as an Internet-Based test.

TOEFL score is often a benchmark for awarding scholarships. It is also mandatory for various Government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses, and many institutions. TOEFL score is valid for 2 years.

TOEFL has essentially two versions:

TOEFL Internet-Based Test(iBT):

The TOEFL Internet-based testing system test is taken worldwide where computers and high internet facilities are available. The total exam duration is 2 hours. Scores are marked from 0-120 marks and cover Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking that involve integrated tasks.

TOEFL Paper Based Test(PBT):

PBT is conducted where no computers and internet are available. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based test) has a duration of 2 hours 30 minutes but this is not applicable in India now.

Few Tips:

Many top colleges and universities across the world usually require a minimum TOEFL cut-off score of around 80 to 85 (the higher the better).
Apart from this, there are many colleges and universities which set the TOEFL cut-off score for each section.
It is always recommended that the candidates should check the correct TOEFL score requirements set by the college/university they are willing to apply to.
It is always best to know your target score, as it will also help you in preparing for the TOEFL exam and one should always aim to score much more than the cut-off score for their getting admission to their dream college.
