• TOEFL, formally known as “Test of English as a Foreign Language”, is an English proficiency test for those non-native English speakers who want to study overseas, in English speaking countries.

  • It was first administered in 1964.

  • The TOEFL test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States. It also stands in need of other English speaking countries.

  • It is administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) and is taken at various locations in India, as Internet Based test.

  • TOEFL score is often a benchmark for awarding scholarships

  • It is also mandatory for various Government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses and many institutions. TOEFL score is valid for 2 years.

  • The TOEFL exam is conducted more than 50 times a year at 4500 test centers in 165 countries worldwide.


TOEFL has essentially two versions:








IBT stands for TOEFL Internet-Based Test. The TOEFL Internet-based testing system test is taken worldwide where computers and high internet facilities are available. Most of the test centers have a TOEFL (IBT). Total Exam duration is 2 hours 47 minutes to 3 hours 23 minutes with a 10-minute break.


PBT stands for Paper Based Test. PBT is conducted where no computers and internet are available. The test pattern and Scoring are different from the TOEFL IBT. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based test) has a duration of 2 hours 30 minutes.

What is the scoring scale for the TOEFL iBT Test?

  1. Scoring is between 0 (Minimum) and 120 (Maximum) with 1-point increment. Four scores are reported on the TOEFL™:

  2. Reading score reported on a 0-30 score scale.

  3. Listening score reported on a 0-30 score scale.

  4. Writing score reported on a 0-30 score scale.

  5. Speaking score reported on a 0-30 score scale.

Few Tips

  • First, understand and analyze the TOEFL Exam pattern and refer to a few previous test papers.

  • Regularly read university-level textbooks or other international journals and newspapers that include a wide variety of subject areas.

  • Concentrate on the content and flow of spoken material at the time of listening. (Recommended to listen to podcasts for an hour each day).

  • Learn grammar and vocabulary and use them naturally while speaking.

  • Make a note of topics that are relatable and practice speaking on them.

  • Learn to manage Your time by practicing: practice makes a man perfect!


Many top colleges and universities across the world usually require a minimum TOEFL cut-off score of around 80 to 85 (the higher the better). Apart from this, there are many colleges and universities which set the TOEFL cut off score for each section. So, it is always recommended that the candidates should check the correct TOEFL score requirements set by the college/university they are willing to apply to. What is the cost/registration fee of TOEFL?

The registration fee for taking the TOEFL® is USD 180.

How many times in a year is the TOEFL® exam held?

Can I take the test in one day?

Yes, the test is given in one day. The test takes about 4 hours, but with check-in you should plan to be at the test center for at least 4½ hours.

How many times can I take the TOEFL®?

TOEFL® can be taken unlimited number of times.

What is the validity of the TOEFL® exam?

Your TOEFL® score will be valid for 2 years from the date the test was taken.

How soon do I get my score?

The scores are available online 2 weeks after the exam date.

How do I pass on my score to the college?

The universities only accept official scores sent directly by ETS. Scores to four colleges can be sent free of cost from the time of TOEFL® registration to 24 hours before the test date. Subsequently, for each score report sent to a college, you would have to pay $19.

What is the minimum TOEFL® score that I need?

For admission, one has to score over 80 for MS and undergrad programs, over 100 for PhD and MBA courses. Usually a score of 100 is required for students who are looking for financial aid/scholarships.

What is the test fee refund policy?

If you cancel your registration before the 4-day advance deadline, you will receive a refund of half the original test fee you paid. Refunds are in U.S. dollars. Cash refunds are not available.
