What is the UCAT?

The University Clinical Aptitude Test is a computer-based admission test used by universities in the UK for admission into medical schools. Top colleges, such as the University of Oxford, the University of Manchester, King’s College London, etc, use this test for their admissions.

Applicants can take the exam only once in a year.

Examination structure

The examination has four separate sections, in multiple-choice format.

  1. Verbal Reasoning- 44 questions to be solved within 22 minutes (an incomplete statement/question with four options, or a true/false question)

  2. Decision Making- 35 questions to be solved within 37 minutes(includes syllogisms, logical puzzles, venn diagrams etc.)

  3. Quantitative Reasoning- 36 questions to be solved within 26 minutes(reference to charts and graphs, basic calculator is provided)

  4. Situational Judgement- 69 questions to be solved with 26 minutes(a scenario with six questions)

The total score is between 900-2700 for the first three sections and a Situational Judgement band between 1-4.

Booking the test

  1. Applicants are required to create a UCAT account before 19 September 2025 and then proceed towards booking a test.

  2.  The test dates are between 7 July and 26 September for entry in 2026.

  3. By early November, the results will be delivered to universities. However the applicants will be able to see their score on the day of the test itself or within 24 hours on their account.

Applying to universities

Applicants will need to apply to the universities of their choice separately. Each university has a different eligibility requirement. Therefore, applying carefully after viewing and reviewing your score is advised. The deadline for medicine and dentistry is 15 October 2025.

Conclusion

The UCAT examination requires time management skills, but it is totally manageable with the correct strategy and right practice. Preparing beforehand and practising well can lead to a high score and, ultimately, a great college. Once you crack your test, you can be a step closer to achieving the medical or dental school of your dreams.
