GMAT Test Structure and Preparation Tips

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

The graduate management admission test is a computer adaptive test taken in the English language for use in admission to graduate management programs in universities across the globe.

Let's first understand the structure of the exam. It has four sections that need to be completed in under three and a half hours, with the option of two breaks in between.

The four sections are:

1. Analytical Writing Assessment

2. Integrated Reasoning

3. Quantitative Reasoning

4. Verbal Reasoning

The candidate has the option of choosing the order of the sections out of the following three section orders when they arrive at the test centre to take the exam:

1. Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, Verbal.

2. Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment.

3. Quantitative, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment.

The choices are provided to the candidates to give them more flexibility and control depending upon their strengths and testing ability.

Understanding what computer-adaptive means?

As mentioned above, GMAT is a computer-adaptive exam, which means that the questions that come up next during the exam depend upon your level of ability. This allows the candidate to assess their potential with high precision.

Along with this, one needs to know that candidate cannot skip or return to any of the previous questions since each question determines the level of difficulty of the upcoming questions.

Tips for GMAT preparation

1. The first and foremost thing is to precisely know the GMAT syllabus and exam pattern and focus on that only.

2. One also need to ensure that considering GMAT as an English proficiency paper is a big mistake; one should focus on all the sections because every section is equally important.

3. The next thing is to choose the preparation material for the exam carefully. It is recommended to use the official GMAT preparation materials since they have been created by the makers of GMAT only and are according to the exam pattern and structure.

4. Next is to keep track of one’s weak sections and focus on them. The candidate also needs to keep track of time and a part of their preparation plan, which will help them on the test day.
