OPT and CPT Explained: Work Opportunities for International Students in the USA

After their studies, international students wish to continue working in the USA and settle there. For this reason, the OPT and CPT are two training programs the US government offers. Read further to know everything you need to know about these programs and how you can proceed after your studies.

CPT (Curricular Practical Training)

This type of visa consists of work experience in the form of internships or practicals that your major requires. In this case, your designated school official may authorize your CPT in the first semester. These jobs you do must be completed before graduation and can be part-time or full-time. However, it is to be noted that if you work for 12 months or more as a full-time CPT, you will lose eligibility to apply for OPT.

You will need to have a Form I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status, which you submitted before starting your academic year, your F1 visa, and an employment offer or a signed cooperative agreement.

OPT (Optional Practical training)

This program allows international students to work for up to 12 months in an institution related to their field of education. It is not permanent. You can apply for an OPT before or after you complete your education. Those in STEM fields can apply for a STEM OPT Extension to get an additional 24 months of OPT.

Your DSO( Designated School Official) will recommend you for OPT and provide you with a

new Form I-20 to be filled.

STEM extension

You can apply for a 24 months STEM extension while currently enrolled in OPT, and have received a degree from a STEM related field. The form for the same is Form I-983, “Training Plan for STEM OPT Students.”
