Studying in Europe Without IELTS – Is It Possible?

Many Universities in European countries offer opportunities for international students without requiring an IELTS score. Different alternatives are considered if you have not provided the university with an IELTS score. 

Providing an English documentation proof to the university is essential because they need to know if you understand the language in which they will teach, as all lectures, examinations, and discussions will be conducted in English. Some countries also require proof of English ability for the student visa application.

• Medium of Instruction (MOI) Certificate: 

Many universities accept a certificate as proof of your English proficiency from your previous educational institution. You will need to request the MOI certificate from your institution, which confirms that your education was conducted in English. 

• TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language):

It is an English proficiency test accepted by many universities worldwide, including the majority in the United States, Asia, Canada, and Europe. This test measures your ability to read, write, speak, and listen in English and is used as a proficiency test in universities and companies to assess candidates for employment. The cost of the exam ranges from $200 to $300. There are three types of TOEFL:

• TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test): Most commonly taken at examination centres online, or at home. 

• TOEFL Essentials: This test is a shorter format, but it is not accepted at all institutions. 

• TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test): This format is outdated and very rare, available at only a few locations. 

• PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic):

This test is another English proficiency test which is fully computer-based, and even the speaking section is recorded on the computer. The scores are checked by artificial intelligence to reduce human errors. The dates of this test are flexible, and the results are announced within 1-5 days.  

The cost of the test is approximately $185 to $220. This test is usually shorter than the TOEFL and IELTS, with fewer human interactions and faster results. The score of this is valid for 2 years. 

• Duolingo English Test (DET)

This test is a newer, fully online English Proficiency test accepted by several universities for admissions. It is for university admissions and scholarship applications, but is not usually accepted for visa purposes. 

It is entirely online and produces results within 48 hours. The cost of the test is significantly lower compared to IELTS and TOEFL, at around $59. The test scores are valid up to 2 years.
