First, Students must complete their Undergraduate degree program for four years before they take the MCAT examination for admission into medical school. Unlike in the USA, the medical journey in the UK begins at the undergraduate level, which the student can join after high school. It lasts 5 to 6 years, depending on the program. 

The Master’s in Medicine is usually of 3 years, therefore making the total 8 to 9 years. 

Examinations

USA

The main examination administered in the USA is the MCAT, or the Medical College Admission Test, a computer-based multiple-choice examination. The total score ranges from 472 to 528, divided into four sections. 

UK

The examinations given by students after high school are either the UCAT(University Clinical Aptitude Test) or the BMAT(Biomedical Admissions Test). The UCAT score ranges from 1200 to 2700, while the BMAT uses a 9-point scale in their scoring.

USA

Because the course duration is quite long, the US curriculum focuses on theoretical knowledge and research during the first years and later focuses on clinical experience. There is also a focus on speciality training. It’s more research-oriented, and clinical rotations begin in the third year.

Education in the UK focuses primarily on clinical exposure, and students are exposed to clinical rotations early in their courses. The general understanding is that doctors are more rounded. Hospital placement is an encouraging factor here.
