What GPA Do You Need for Ivy League vs Russell Group vs Group of Eight

Whenever we think about getting admissions into top universities, the first thing that grabs our attention is the GPA requirement. It can drastically impact our application. The good thing is that there is no standard GPA that you have to aim for. The “right” GPA largely varies based on what your target is. The Ivy League (US), Russell Group (UK), and Group of Eight (Australia) all have different GPA targets. Let’s explore them in this blog.

What GPA Do You Need for Ivy League vs Russell Group vs Group of Eight

Requirements for Ivy League

The eight Ivy League universities of the US include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, and Cornell. These universities are very specific about their GPA requirements. They don’t publish it officially, but it’s clear from the data of students who are admitted.

Let’s clearly see the GPA requirements-

  • Unweighted GPA- 3.9 - 4

  • Weighted GPA- 4.1 - 4.3 or more

  • Class rank- usually top 5 to 10 % of their school

Translating it for International students, it’s as follows-

  • For CBSE or ISC students- they require  95% or more in Class 12

  • For IB, you need 40 or more out of 45

  • In A-Levels, mostly an A*is required with very strong grades.

If you have a GPA below 3.8, you are not automatically disqualified. You still have a chance, but honestly, it’s not that easy to make it with a low GPA. You can do it with world-class achievements or talent in extra-curriculars.

-> A point to remember about the Ivy League is that a high GPA is kind of a basic requirement, not something that can set you apart.

Requirements for Russell Group

The Russell Group comprises 24 research-focused universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Edinburgh, and Manchester. UK admissions are very different from the US in that they are based on grades in specific subjects rather than GPA as a whole.

UK universities don’t use GPA essentially, but if you want an idea about GPA requirements, here are the estimates-

  • For Top-tier universities (like Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE)

You need a GPA around 3.6 to 4

    A-levels from AAA to AA*A

IB score from 38 to 42 or above

  • For Mid-tier universities (like Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield)

GPA requirement is 3 to 3.5

    A- levels from AAA-AAB

IB score from 34 to 38

  • For Other universities in the group (Newcastle, Exeter, Nottingham, etc.)

You need a GPA from 2.8 to 3.4

A-Levels from ABB-BBB and depending on the course

-> A point to remember for the Russell Group is that your subject grades and overall application matter more than a single GPA. You need to strengthen your complete application in order to secure admission here.

Requirements for the Group of Eight

The Group of Eight in Australia includes universities such as Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, ANU, Monash, Queensland, Adelaide, and Western Australia. Most of the universities use percentages or local GPA scales for admissions. Clear benchmarks are provided for both domestic and international students regarding GPA requirements.

In order to get entry into undergraduate programs in the Group of Eight  of Australia, these are  some of the requirements you need to meet-

  • For Melbourne, Sydney, and UNSW

You need around 80 to 85 % or an equivalent GPA

Programs like business or engineering usually require them at the higher end.

  • For ANU, Monash, and Queensland

    Around 75 to 80 % is required

It is important to perform well in specific subjects.

  • For Adelaide and Western Australia

    You need around 70 to 75 %

These universities are comparatively flexible but might require you to struggle for specific courses.

-> A point to remember here is that for Go8, both GPA and holistic strength matter equally. So, you need to focus on both aspects in order to secure admission in these universities.

Comparison of all the Groups

Group

Required GPA

How does it matter?

Ivy League of US

3.9 - 4 for unweighted

4.1- 4.3 for weighted

GPA serves as baseline to consider applications

Russell Group of UK

3 - 3.5 for mid-tier

3.6 - 4 for top-tier

Subject specific grades matter more than GPA

Group of Eight of Australia

3 - 3.2 for general programs

3.3 - 3.7 for top programs

Both GPA and extracurriculars carry weightage.

Bottom Line

In a nutshell, we can say that in 2026 a good GPA clearly depends on the system you are targeting. It is very important to understand all the systems and clearly spot differences between them in order to set realistic targets for yourself and build applications that match the system’s requirements.

Is GPA more important than subject grades for Russell Group admissions?

For many UK programs, subject-specific performance is particularly important. Universities often want to see strong grades in subjects directly relevant to the course you're applying for.

Students should avoid directly converting their percentage or school grades into a US-style GPA without guidance. Universities often have their own methods for evaluating international qualifications. Check the official requirements for your curriculum, such as CBSE, ISC, IB, or A-Levels, before making comparisons.

It depends on the university and program. Academic performance is generally central to undergraduate admission, while some programs may consider additional selection factors. Students should check the specific requirements for their chosen course rather than assuming that extracurriculars can compensate for academic requirements.
