1. Course Research and Selection

The first step is figuring out what and where you want to study

Start early: The UCAS course search for 2026 entry opened on 29 April 2025. This is your chance to explore thousands of courses across UK universities.

How many choices? You can apply to up to five courses. If you’re applying for medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science, only four of those choices can be for these competitive fields.

Where to look: Use university websites, official rankings, student forums, and attend virtual open days to compare programmes, modules, campus life, and more.

2. Getting Your UCAS Application Ready

You can begin your application via the UCAS Hub from 13 May 2025 but submissions are only accepted from 2 September 2025.

You’ll need to provide

  • Personal details and academic history

  • Up to five course choices

  • One reference (usually from a teacher or counsellor)

  • A personal statement (details on new format below)

Application fee: Around £28.50 for up to five choices

3. Personal Statement: New Format for 2026 Entry

Starting with the 2026 cycle, UCAS has replaced the traditional personal statement essay with a structured format. Instead of one big essay, you'll answer three specific questions related to your course choices.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Minimum 350 characters per answer

  • Maximum total: 4,000 characters across all responses

  • Focus areas include

    • Why you’re applying and what excites you about the subject

    • Your academic strengths and skills

    • Relevant extracurriculars or experiences

4. Key UCAS Deadlines for 2025–2026

Once you’ve submitted your application, universities begin reviewing it. Here’s what you might receive:

Conditional Offer: You’ll need to meet specific conditions like final exam results Unconditional.

Offer: You’ve already met all the requirements Unsuccessful: Your application wasn't accepted.

When Will You Hear Back?

Oxbridge typically sends decisions by mid-January Most other universities aim to send offers by March 2026.

Replying to Offers

You can accept

  • One firm offer (your top choice)

  • One insurance offer (a backup in case you miss your firm offer)

Reply deadlines depend on when you get your last decision

  • By 31 March 2026 → Reply by 6 May 2026

  • By 13 May 2026 → Reply by 3 June 2026

  • By 15 July 2026 → Reply by 22 July 2026

Once you reply your decision becomes binding.

6. Didn’t Get Any Offers? There’s Still Hope

UCAS Extra (26 Feb to 4 July 2026)

If you’ve used all five choices and didn’t receive an offer you can apply to additional courses one at a time.

Clearing (5 July to 19 Oct 2026)

Missed deadlines or didn’t meet your offers? Clearing helps you find courses with vacancies. Many students find great universities this way.

Use the UCAS search tool to call universities directly and apply quickly. Places fill up fast.

7. Final Tips to Stay Ahead

  • Get your reference early: Ask your teacher or advisor in advance to avoid last-minute delays.

  • Check for additional tests: Some courses especially at Oxford and Cambridge require entrance exams or written work. Deadlines for these are often earlier than the UCAS deadlines.

  • Deferrals: Want to take a gap year? Check with the university about deferral policies before applying.

  • Stay organized: Keep a checklist of documents test dates deadlines and login info.

Conclusion

The UCAS process is manageable with the right planning. Start your research early stay on top of deadlines and craft each part of your application carefully especially your new-format personal statement.
