Entrances to Crack to Study in South Korea

Studying in South Korea is a dream for most of the youth these days. From wanting to try authentic tteok-bokki to experiencing the campus life of Kitty from XOXO Kitty, one wants it all! And why not, when South Korea is offering amazing scholarships and exchange programs, one would take anything to get into one. Now, for everyone wondering WHAT exactly one takes, for starters, let’s dive into language proficiency.

Entrances to Crack to Study in South Korea

English Proficiency Tests

The top tests one needs to know to prove their English proficiency level are TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and TEPS.

  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language): One of the most well-known and widely accepted by the majority of Korean Universities. For TOEFL iBT, both undergraduate and graduate students need to ensure an 80 to 100+ score to get into the elite universities. It evaluates your English skills through areas like Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Registration is available through the ETS website, with an application cost of $220 (approx ₩290,000 to ₩300,000 KRW; ₹15,254). Late fees and rescheduling fees might differ from region to region.

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Another popular entrance exam sought out by study abroad students. To become eligible for the elite group of universities, one needs to have an overall score of 7.0 to 7.5. The application fee ranges from $200 to $300 (approx. ₩280,000 to ₩290,00 KRW; ₹18,000).

  • Other possible tests: Depending on the university in question, some also allow application by providing documents like a Medium of Instruction (MOI) Certificate (proving your language of study was English in the last university), or an English Proficiency certificate, and Interviews conducted and provided by your department office. PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic) is another English proficiency test that is rapidly gaining acceptance across universities.

Korean Language Proficiency Tests

If you plan to apply to Korean-speaking universities, you must prove your level of Korean proficiency. TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is one of the most important tests for international students if they plan to study or work in Korea for a long time. It is conducted 6 times throughout the year, with an offline as well as online option available to take the exam. For short courses, for basic Korean communication, completing TOPIK I (levels 1 and 2) is enough. However, for degree programs, one needs to complete TOPIK II (level 3 to 6). Undergraduate universities accept TOPIK II level 3 for admissions, but for postgraduate and competitive programs, one needs TOPIK II level 4+.

GRE-GMAT

All students aiming for business, economics, or research-based post-graduate programs need to take the GRE or GMAT exams. While only one is needed for applying, one should check out which exam has higher acceptance in their expected university. Students applying for research-oriented programs might have research proposals and interviews, along with the proficiency tests, as part of the application process.

Students need to ensure all documents, like academic transcripts, language proficiency test scores, SOPs, ROLs, as well as documents indicating financial statuses proving that one can support tuition and accommodation fees. Each college has its own way of functioning; hence, it is imperative to know what your college requires.

Conclusion

How long are English and Korean proficiency test scores valid for South Korean university applications?

Most English proficiency tests, like IELTS and TOEFL, remain valid for two years. Similarly, TOPIK scores are generally valid for two years, so students should plan their test dates carefully according to application deadlines.

Is it beneficial to submit both English and Korean proficiency test scores?

Yes, submitting both can strengthen an application. While English scores help with academic admission, Korean proficiency demonstrates cultural adaptability and may improve scholarship and internship opportunities.

How many times can students take language proficiency tests before applying?

Students can take most language proficiency tests multiple times. Universities usually consider the highest score submitted within the validity period, allowing students to improve their performance if needed.

Can students receive conditional admission if they do not meet language proficiency requirements?

Some universities offer conditional admission, allowing students to complete language training courses before starting their academic program. This option depends on the university and course requirements.
