GRE- The Doorway To a Dazzling Future!

Updated: Mar 27, 2023

The Graduate Record Examination, or GRE, is one of the most major and important steps in the graduate school or business school application process. It is a computer-based, standardized exam, consisting of multiple-choice questions, that is often required for admission to graduate programs(MA & MSc) and graduate business programs (MBA) globally.

The GRE is developed and administered by test-maker ETS to provide graduate and business schools with common measures for comparing applicants’ qualifications for graduate-level academic work. The admission committees look at your GRE score, along with your academic record and supporting information, to assess your readiness for the challenging graduate academic study at the most reputed universities.

At present, thousands of master’s and doctoral programs accept GRE scores, including more than 1,200 business schools, several of which are top-ranked M.B.A. programs. GRE scores are also accepted by many fellowship sponsors. So, there are high chances that at least one of the programs you’re applying to, will require GRE scores. (This only applies if you’re getting a master’s degree or Ph.D. For other types of grad degrees, applicants are typically required to take an entirely different test for admission, such as the GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT.)

If you’re not sure whether you need to take the GRE, it’s best to take a look at your respective program directly. Remember, if you don’t take the GRE and its scores are required for admission to a course, you won’t be able to complete your graduate school application and therefore won’t be able to get into that program!

I am sure making a decision to attend graduate school is difficult. If you ultimately decide that this year isn’t the best time for you to start a master’s program, that is also completely fine. By giving the GRE now, you can use your score anytime, within five years of taking the test.

In addition to your GRE score, you have to submit a personal statement, resume, letters of recommendation and transcripts. If you feel like one (or many) of that information is not as strong as you’d hoped and liked, your GRE score is a great doorway to show the admission committee that you’ve got additional skills that you can bring to the table. While having a strong GRE score won’t guarantee admission, it certainly can help make up for other areas that might be lacking.
