TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (The International English Language Testing System) are two such examinations. They are English Proficiency Tests. Based on their respective scores and bands, one gets the college in countries such as USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Both the papers constitute of 4 sections, i.e., Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking but they still hold a lot of differences within them. They both are required to be approached differently. Speaking and Writing section are the most scoring ones and does not even ask for abundant effort. For Speaking Tests
1. Practice More
It is well said- “Practice makes a person perfect”. One should always apply this trick while practicing fluency for the speaking test. Also try communicating in English as much as possible so that on your D-Day, you won’t stammer while speaking.
2. Record
As it is mentioned in the last point that one should practice as much as possible, one should also keep a track of how he/she is speaking. Try recording your speech while speaking some times and then bring required positive changes to it if needed.
3. Be Natural
Try staying natural as much as possible. Don’t try to fake your accent. Originality makes your individuality stand out from the crowd.
4. Begin Well
We all have heard this line that the first impression, is last. While giving your speaking test, start calmly, don’t panic. Once you begin well, you’re definitely going to end up well as well. Avoid making mess in the beginning.
5. Use of Vocabulary, phrases and tenses
While giving the speaking test, always focus on your tenses. Apart from that using more words and phrases would make you stand out from the crowd.
For Writing Tests
1. Read A lot!
Yes! Reading is a must to expand your knowledge and critical analysis. Reading will also help you in exercising your brain. So, read as much as possible to write well in exam.
2. Don’t Cram and Spit
Reading just stands for reading only. Never cram or try learning answers, which actually needs to be done by analytical thinking. Always remember your originality will make you stand out from the crowd.
3. Keep a check on News
Keeping up with current affairs is also a must. One should always be aware about what’s going around the globe. Especially, when one has to cross seven seas to study. BBC is highly recommended channel because of the impeccable hold on English that the speakers tend to have.
4. Practice mock tests
Practicing mock tests as much as possible is need of the hour. Writing only gets improved when one actually writes, finds mistakes and later corrects it. Through this process one brings positive changes and learns how to ace the writing section. Also, don’t forget to add enough vocabulary, idioms and phrases to it.
5. Watch English movies and series
Preparing for such big exams is a bit tedious task. So always give yourself a break and what could be better than a movie break. You will end up learning so much in the process of enjoyment!
IELTS and TOEFL are not difficult examinations once one prepares well. The tips given above can turn stupendous if used well with enough wit. The scores and bands of both the exams can open thousand doors of opportunity and turn windows into mirrors.
