Ivy League vs Public Ivies: Which Is Better for International STEM Students?

2 min read

When someone thinks of pursuing STEM in the US, they mostly think of two groups of schools: it’s either the Ivy League, eight private universities with global brand power, or the “Public Ivies,” top state universities, such as UC Berkeley, Michigan, Georgia Tech, and UIUC, that offer comparable academics at a lower sticker price. Want to know which is a better choice for you? Let’s compare the two!

Ivy League vs Public Ivies: Which Is Better for International STEM Students?

Which one is a better choice for you?

Here’s a table showing everything you need to know on the topic of “Ivy League vs Public Ivies: Which Is Better for International STEM Students?” to make a fair choice for yourself:

Factor

Ivy League

Public Ivies

Financial aid

Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown are need-blind for international applicants. Columbia, Penn are need-aware. Need-blind schools also meet 100% of demonstrated need. For low- and middle-income families, the real cost can be far below the sticker price.

Generally do not match this. Purdue offers little to no scholarships or loans for internationals. Georgia Tech's total annual cost is about $54,212 for 2025-26, which you may have to cover mostly yourself.

Admission difficulty

Very low admit rates. Columbia reported 4.23% and Yale 4.24% for the Class of 2030. Internationals face tougher odds at need-aware schools, where finances can count against you.

Selective, but somewhat less so. Georgia Tech has the lowest acceptance rate at 16% and Purdue the highest at 50%. Rates for international applicants are often lower than the overall figure, and some states limit out-of-state seats.

STEM academics

Small classes, close faculty contact and strong undergraduate research opportunities, such as Princeton's senior thesis.

Strong in engineering and computing. Georgia Tech ranks 4th for undergraduate engineering and 7th for computer science in US News. Berkeley, Michigan and UIUC also have large research programs and big industry recruiting pipelines. You may need to be proactive to get one-on-one attention in large classes.

Career outcomes and work rights

An Ivy name helps with consulting, finance and some graduate admissions.

Employers recruit heavily from top public universities for engineering and tech jobs. Skills, projects and internships matter more than the name on the degree.

Visa and work rules

The same for both. All F-1 students are eligible for post-study work authorization, and STEM graduates can usually apply for an extension. These rules change, so check the current policy before you commit.

Same as Ivy League

So, which should you choose?

  • Choose an Ivy if you qualify for substantial need-based aid at a need-blind school, want small classes and research access, or are targeting competitive graduate programs.

  • Choose a Public Ivy if you are paying mostly out of pocket, want a large engineering or computing ecosystem, or want a more attainable admission target.

Bottom Line

All in all, whether it's the Ivy League colleges or the Public Ivies, both are known for quality education and are well recognized for it. The best plan for you would be to apply to the need-blind Ivies, adding several Public Ivies and other strong STEM schools, and compare actual offers before deciding; or in other words, a mix of the two.
