Program Overview:

A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is a three-year professional graduate-level degree in law. It is the standard degree required to practice law in the United States and is offered by accredited law schools.

The J.D. program typically covers a wide range of legal subjects necessary for a career in law, including constitutional law, torts, contracts, criminal law, property law, civil procedure, legal writing, and more. Graduates of a J.D. program are eligible to take the bar examination in the state they wish to practice law, and upon passing, they become licensed attorneys.

Curriculum:

First Year

Harvard Law School's first-year curriculum covers core principles and concepts, theory, and skills of legal practice. Students take courses in civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law, legislation and regulation, property, and torts, providing a solid foundation in legal reasoning and analysis, governing structures of the U.S. legal system and the role of statutes and regulations within that system.

Second Year

The Law School offers seven optional Programs of Study, which guide students in structuring an academic program focused on their chosen areas of interest. These programs provide exposure to law, policy, theory, and practice in fields such as Law and Government, Law and Business, Criminal Justice, and more.

Third Year

In their third year, the Law School motivates students to participate in a capstone learning experience. This includes advanced seminars, clinical practice, and writing projects that require students to utilise their complete knowledge, skills, and methodological tools in a field. The objective is to tackle the most exciting and complicated legal problems of today.

Admission and Requirements:

Prospective students aspiring for the JD program are required to meet specific admission criteria:

1. Educational Background:

All individuals who wish to apply for admission must possess a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) by August of the year you are applying unless you have completed all the necessary requirements before September and are waiting for your degree to be conferred.

2. Law School Admission Test (LSAT), Graduate Record Examination(GRE)

Harvard Law School accepts the LSAT or GRE as long as the score was earned within five years of the expected date of entry into law school.

  • Applicants who have taken the LSAT must submit their application only via the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) and participate in the Credential Assembly Service provided by LSAC. The median LSAT score for all program entrants is 163.

  • Applicants who choose to take the GRE instead of the LSAT must direct the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send all GRE test scores from the past five years to the HLS using School Code 2135.

3. Application Process:

The enrollment application for Fall Term 2024 will be made available through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) website on September 15, 2023. This process usually involves an online application form, payment of an application fee, submission of transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and sometimes a resume or CV.

The application for Fall Term 2024 closes on February 15, 2024.

4. Personal Statement:

The personal statement allows applicants to showcase their writing skills and explain their motivation for pursuing a legal education. It often includes reasons for choosing law, career aspirations, and personal experiences that have shaped their interest in the legal field.

5. Letters of Recommendation:

Typically, law schools request letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the applicant's academic abilities, character, and potential to succeed in a rigorous educational program like a JD. These letters are often from professors, employers, or professionals who can speak to the applicant's qualifications.

6. Additional Considerations:

Applicants with diverse backgrounds, work experience, community involvement, or unique skills often stand out in the application process. Here are the necessary application resources to apply to HLS.

Tuition and Costs:

Standard Tuition fee for HLS costs around $75,008 which is equivalent to Rs.62.51 lakhs(INR). Other expenses including housing, food, books, course materials and travel allowance amounts to $35,992 or Rs.29.9 lakhs.

It's essential to visit the university's official website or contact their admissions or financial aid department for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding the program's costs.

Conclusion:

The JD program offered by the HLS is a highly regarded program for individuals who are interested in pursuing a legal education. The program maintains the highest standards of legal education while adapting to the evolving learning environment.
